Debut of The Wallace Project - Year 4

Public release of The Wallace Project: Year Four, a short documentary about grassland restoration in Western Kansas. We will be holding a free virtual screening followed by a Q&A from members of our team who are featured in the film. Students are also welcome if you choose to share.

In 2021, The Provenance Company acquired 2,740 acres of degraded cropland in Western Kansas, and were tasked with bringing the land back to the native grassland it once was. Provenance chose a nature-based solution, restoring the ecology with hooves, similar to the bison that were exterminated from the Great Plains. Four years later, the grassland is beginning to come into balance, but a more pressing issue is at hand: Wallace County, Kansas is running out of water. The county has lost 80% of their water supply from the Ogallala Aquifer, which is being mined primarily for irrigated crop farming. Provenance hopes to prove ecological and financial success in regenerative practices, demonstrating a pathway for local farmers to transition away from aquifer dependency, before it’s too late.
