The Kansas City Food Circle is celebrating the 16th annual Eat Local and Organic Expos, which kick off the local growing and farmers market season each spring.
Visitors can buy local, organic produce; free range meat, eggs and dairy; and vegetable seedlings for home gardening. The Expos are also a great place to learn more about and sign up for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), where consumers can buy their food directly from farmers. Both Expos are free admission and feature free parking as well.
KCFC will also be handing out free copies of the 2014 KC Food Circle Directory of Producers, which provides detailed information on KCFC member farmers and area organic farmers markets. Expo attendees may become a member of the KC Food Circle and receive a 2014 Eat Local & Organic! Dining Card which provides a onetime 10% discount on 13 area restaurants that source their food locally, organically, and freerange.
The Smokin’ Fresh Streetside BBQ food truck will be on hand at both Expos serving organic BBQ in the parking lot. Smokin’ Fresh will be honoring the Dining Card discount.
Both events will offer the public unique and free educational opportunities. This year the Expos will feature a series of short documentary films as well as a presentation on biodiversity from Slow Food Kansas City.
The Expos have changed significantly since the first event in 1999; there were only 10 farmers, but 250 people came just to talk to those 10 farmers. In 2004, KCFC began holding two events at two different locations in the metro area. Overall attendance continues to rise, averaging about 2,000 people in recent years. This year the Kansas Expo will be moving to the Johnson County Community College Gym to accommodate growth.
Sponsors of this year’s Expo are Local Pig Charcuterie, Howard’s Organic Fare and Vegetable Patch, Door to Door Organics, Fertrell, Slow Food Kansas City, Sierra Club, KKFI, and KC Greens. Services are provided by Precision Printing. Graphic design is provided by Joshua Fultz and Rachel Allen.
The KC Food Circle is a nonprofit organization connecting local eaters and local, organic, and free range growers for over 20 years.
